#Congress #war #peace #Ukraine
We live in very troubled times. Every day we hear about new conflicts, wars, and especially the victims of senseless violence. Importantly, only a thorough understanding of contemporary and historical conflicts allows us to adopt the right attitude and approach to these important issues. Each war and threat to peace has its own local character. Therefore, the aim of the International Congress is to understand the causes of these disturbing phenomena.
Among the many questions that arise, the following deserve special attention:
– The concept of peace in the social thought of the Church
– Catholic theology of peace and secular pacifism
– The concept of a just war in the history and contemporary teaching of the Church
– Respect for human rights as a basic condition for peace
– The importance of the pilgrimage of St. John Paul II to Ukraine in 2001 in a contemporary context
– St. John Paul II in the face of the war in the Balkans (interesting reminder of facts from the past because the war was fought in Europe and this could be a current point of reference)
– memories of the war
This year’s Congress, organized by the University of Social and Media Culture in Toruń, wants to take up these issues. The theme of the Congress “Catholics and war and peace” is to some extent set in the context of the contemporary pandemic and crisis, which has limited and continues to limit human rights.
We cordially invite all interested parties to participate in the Congress: both physically in Toruń and online.
